Three Types of Deck Products
There are three main types of deck products, and Superior Products carries and installs all three types of decks. Here’s a quick overview of the different types of materials used to build decks:
Composite decking is a popular option for those who want a low-maintenance, long-lasting deck. Composite decking is made from a combination of woodchips or sawdust, and plastic (often recycled), which is processed to look like real wood. Manufacturers mix these materials with pigment and a preservative, heat it and form into boards. Composite decking’s biggest advantage is its low maintenance. It doesn’t absorb or give off moisture like real wood, so it doesn’t shrink or swell. Composite decking also resists insects, rotting, and warping. Perhaps most important, composite decking materials don’t ever have to be sanded, stained, or sealed like wood.
PVC decking is made of Polyvinyl Chloride, and sometimes additional recycled plastic. Since it has no organic materials, it’s long-lasting and is quite resistant to fading, staining, and mold. PVC decking is considerably lighter in weight than wood composite decking, and it can be bent or shaped into interesting curved shapes. PVC also typically has a sheen to it because of the materials used.
Many homeowners still prefer a wood deck, even though it requires more maintenance than composite or PVC decking. A typical wood deck will require sealing and staining every couple of years, as well as sanding if people and pets are picking up splinters from the wood. In addition, if a soft wood is used, particularly for stairs and areas of high traffic or where furniture is being moved around a lot, the wood can get beat up, or chipped, requiring replacement.
